When we smile, the skin on the outside corners our eyes wrinkle naturally, these wrinkles are called laugh lines. When we stop smiling, however, and some lines or wrinkles remain, these are called "crow's feet". Some of us would love to see it as signs of a happy and eventful life, but whether we admit it or not, wrinkles, no matter what we call them, are signs of aging.

There are ways to prevent and lessen wrinkles aside from Botox or other expensive surgical treatments for the face. The best way to prevent and lessen crow's feet is to live a healthy lifestyle. Too much exposure to the sun is one of the primary causes of wrinkles. Make sure that you apply sunblock whenever going out, no matter if it's a bright sunny day or not. Always keep a pair of sunglasses in your bag, just in case you would suddenly need more UV protection.

Aside from the sun, one of the most notorious causes of premature aging is our unhealthy habits. Smoking and using tanning beds damage your skin in ways that are not immediately noticeable. Not only are they damaging your skin, smoking and tanning beds are also proven causes of cancer. You need to make sure you eat healthy, always keep yourself hydrated and never forget to exfoliate and moisturize your skin, take vitamins and keep an active lifestyle. These tips would surely help in keeping your skin elasticity and youth. Remember, what you put inside your body determines what gets out of it. So get rid of your unhealthy habits and replace them with health enriching regimens.

Anti-Aging and Sunscreen

April 21st, 2011 Leonora Posted in Remedies and Products, Skin Care, Tips and Techniques, Treatment and Prevention No Comments »

Maybe one of the most taken for granted products is sunscreen. Sure we use them when we go swimming whether at the beach or the pool but other than that, do we really take time to apply sunscreen on our face every single day? Sunscreen is probably one of the best, if not the best, anti-aging product that we can get our hands on at a less-costly price.

Using a body lotion with sunscreen protection all over the body is highly recommended but using sunscreen on the face is on the high top of the list especially since its the face that receives more direct sunlight thus, harming the skin. So, what it is that we should look for in an effective sunscreen?

  1. High SPF - SPF (Sun Protection Factor) is the "laboratory measure of the effectiveness of the sunscreen". The higher the SPF, the more protection it offers. Depending on your activities, at least SPF 15 is recommended for the arms and legs (and other exposed areas) and much higher SPF on the face since as mentioned, it receives more direct sunlight.
  2. Suits your skin type - there are sunscreen specially made for specific skin types. Make sure you choose the ones right for you.
  3. Moisturize - a good sunscreen not only protects the skin but moisturizes it too to keep the skin from drying and dulling. There are facial moisturizers that already has SPF, it would be totally worth it to get a 2-in-1 product especially if the budget is tight but make sure that it meets all the criteria of an effective sunscreen.
  4. Good ingredients - choose those with antioxidants, Vitamin E and other skin-loving ingredients. These can help fight off other environmental damage and nourish the skin.
  5. And most importantly, choose a sunscreen that you would definitely never get tired of using everyday. Make sure you don't feel greasy, it smells good (or unscented) whichever you prefer.

In the long run, you will see and feel the benefits of using sunscreen:

  • Prevents skin discoloration
  • Prevents skin cancer
  • Reduce wrinkling
  • Reduce the appearance of fine and premature facial lines
  • Nourish and moisturize the skin (prevents dullness and dryness)
  • Fight free radicals
  • Helps repair skin damage
  • Reduce and prevent inflammation/sunburn

Vitamin K: The Anti-Aging Vitamin

April 17th, 2011 Leonora Posted in Diets and Nutrition, Health No Comments »

The benefits of Vitamin K are not widely known. Vitamin K provides a total balance of 80 nutrients that is essential for the human body. This includes minerals, antioxidants, enzymes, vitamins, amino acids, herbal extracts, and carotenoids to name a few. The most vital role of Vitamin K is to  regulate proper blood sugar and prevent blood loss. Majority of us are probably not aware that Vitamin K plays a major role in protecting your bones, liver and arteries too.

As we age, our arteries calcify and our bone loses calcium. While our bones need calcium, high calcium level on our arteries signals high risks of heart attacks. Vitamin K performs a dual role in assisting our body to be calcium absorbent in order to maintain healthy bones and at the same time keep the calcium out of our arteries. In order to keep our bones and arteries healthy despite aging, we need to include Vitamin K in our daily diet especially since it is a water-soluble vitamin and should be replenished everyday.

Food sources of Vitamin K:

  • Lettuce
  • Tomatoes
  • Broccoli
  • Spinach
  • Brussels sprout
  • Swiss chard
  • Cauliflower
  • Kiwi fruit
  • Avocado

Make sure these are present in your daily diet to regulate high level of Vitamin K. A sufficient Vitamin K-filled diet will definitely keep you healthy and worry-free from the bad effects of aging.

Young Looking Healthy Hair: Coconut Oil

April 10th, 2011 Leonora Posted in Beauty, Tips and Techniques No Comments »

Just like any other part of the body, our hair needs to be protected from aging too. We have used anti-aging lotions and regimens for our skin, why haven’t we thought of doing the same for our hair? Women have probably tried all sorts of hair color and treatments during every salon visit. Which is why some, if not most of us probably suffer from dry, brittle or dull hair. Damaged hair is brought about by one of two culprits:

1.) by the chemicals and products we use, such as hair color, and

2.) too much exposure to the sun.

Conditioning is probably one of the best and most recommended solutions for hair damage and aging. However, salon treatments are usually expensive, and sometimes it’s better if we use a treatment that is natural and much more affordable so we can use it regularly. I researched online, and asked some friends for the best product I can use at home, and I was surprised when most of them suggested coconut oil as conditioning treatment.

I tried it by applying a few drops on the ends of my damp hair and massaged it halfway up in order to get the most oil at the ends, just the right amount on the rest and none at the roots and scalp. I used a shower cap to leave it on for 30 minutes. I’ve done this once a week for almost a month now, and my hair looked healthy and shiny. I recommend you try it too, use the purest coconut oil you can find, and voila, instant salon treatment you can do at home.
